Overview:

See the contemporary architecture and Olympic buildings of Barcelona on a 3.5-hour guided tour of the Sant Martí district, and learn about its spectacular transformation from an industrial neighborhood to a model of smart and sustainable living.

Description:

Explore the dynamic Sant Martí district of Barcelona on a half-day guided tour, and learn how this once industrial area in the heart of the city has been transformed for the 21st century.

Departing from Placa Catalunya, go to the Olympic Village, built for the 1992 Olympic Games. Constructed to house 15,000 athletes during the games, the village faces the Olympic Port, home to Barcelona’s 2 tallest buildings (Hotel Arts and Mapfre Tower). Marvel at the giant copper sculture of a fish between them.

Next, explore the Zona Fòrum. The seafront site was regenerated to hold the Universal Forum of Cultures in 2004, and is now an open area that hosts leisure activities. There is also a bathing area, new marina, and gigantic photovoltaic cell to admire.

Continue to 22@ Barcelona. The old industrial land of Poblenou has been converted into a compact city, where innovative research, training and technology companies co-exist. Your guide will point out innovative housing and public facilities, as well as green areas, such as the Parc Central del Poblenou, Media-TIC, and museum at Can Framis.

At Plaça de les Glòries, experience where the main roads of the Avinguda Diagonal, Meridiana, and Gran Via all meet. Marvel at the Torre Agbar next to the Disseny Hub Barcelona and Hotel Silken. Stop for a refreshment at the hotel, and enjoy the panoramic views from its terrace. On the other side of the square lie the Auditori de Barcelona, Teatre Nacional de Catalunya, and Mercat dels Encants (flea market).

Go to Mercat dels Encants, to see how the 14th century market (one of the oldest in Europe) maintains Barcelona’s reputation for commercial dynamism in the modern era. Its new location features a large deck that shades the market, while preserving the feeling of an outdoor area. Those that wish can stay at the market to shop on their own. Alternatively, transfer back to Placa Catalunya for the end of your tour.
